Little is known about the origins of Little Polly Flinders and about her identity. The nursery rhyme has fallen out of use due to changing social norms.
Initially, the “moral” of the rhyme was to teach young girls to pay attention to not spoil their clothes otherwise they might get whipped, a practice widely used long time ago.
“Little Polly Flinders” Lyrics
Little Polly Flinders
Sat among the cinders
Warming her pretty little toes!
Her mother came and caught her,
And whipped her little daughter,
For spoiling her nice new clothes.
