Stella Ella Ola, often known as Quack Dilly Oso, is a children’s game involving chanting a simple rhyme while performing hand motions in a circle with friends. Stella Ella Ola is one of the most popular clapping games in the United States, along with Miss Mary Mack.

Stella Ella Ola Game:

Here’s how the game and rhyme go:

Players stand in a circle and hold hands. One person is chosen to be the leader and starts the chant by saying the lyrics:

Stella Ella Ola,
Clap, clap, clap.
The group responds:
Stella Ella Ola,
Clap, clap, clap.
The leader continues:
Oopsy, oopsy, bow wow wow,
Oopsy, oopsy, bow wow wow.
The group responds:
Oopsy, oopsy, bow wow wow,
Oopsy, oopsy, bow wow wow.

The leader then chooses a person in the circle to say the following line and perform the accompanying hand motion. The chosen person says:

My mother told me,
If I was goody,
That she would buy me,
A rubber dolly.

The chosen person then chooses the next person in the circle to say the following line, perform the next hand motion, and so on. Each person adds a new line and hand motion, building on the previous ones. The hand motions usually involve clapping, slapping one’s thighs, and pointing to different parts of the circle.

The game continues until everyone has had a turn and the rhyme has been completed. The game is often played for fun and entertainment and is a popular activity for children at parties or gatherings.

Stella Ella Ola Lyrics

Stella Ella Ola,
Clap, clap, clap
Singing es, chico, chico
Chico, chico, clap, clap
Es chico, chico
Baloney, baloney
Cheese and macaroni
Fire 1, 2, 3, 4, 5!

Ip Dip is often used to determine who will be “it” in a game of tag or other playground games. It is a simple and fun way for children to make decisions and assign roles in a group.

The exact origin of the rhyme “Ip Dip” is not well documented, but it appears to have originated in the United Kingdom and is believed to have been first played by children in the 19th century.

Over time, variations of the game have emerged, with different phrases and rules, but the basic concept of pointing at a group of people and counting to choose the next person to be “it” remains the same.

Ip Dip Lyrics

Ip dip, sky blue.
Who’s it? Not you.
Not because you’re dirty,
Not because you’re clean,
My mother says you’re the fairy queen.

Hickety Pickety Bumblebee is a folk song that is designed to help people learn the names of others when in a group setting. It is popular in schools, Guides, Scouts, and other child-focused activities. The song is short in length and clarifies a name each time – the name of the person who is in the middle and then the group responds by repeating the name of the person to help make it more memorable.

Once one person has had a go, they swap for someone else and continue to go around the room until everyone has been able to take part and until every name has been successfully shared.

There are a number of alternative singing games like this that work on improving a child’s working memory whilst keeping them properly entertained and excited. You may also hear this song being referred to as Hickety Tickety Bumblebee which uses all the same lyrics but just swaps the word Pickety for Tickety.

Hickety Pickety Bumblebee Lyrics

Hickety pickety bumblebee,
Can you sing your name for me?
(One child) My name is “…”
(All together) Your name is “…”

Another popular song in America, Jenny Jenkins has been used as a way for boys to ask girls that they like to dance with them. Boys were expected to choose a color and the girl they were talking to had to come up with a word that rhymes with that specific color. Should the girl be unable to choose a color that rhymed, she would then be expected to dance with the boy as a forfeit.

The origins of Jenny Jenkins are not well known but many experts claim that it would have been used as a song that was passed on from person to person by word of mouth, making it impossible to credit the original lyric writer.

The song was first found in the Green Mountain Songster in 1823 and continues to be a popular choice for a playground rhyme in the USA, helping young people break the ice and get to know new people easier.

Jenny Jenkins Lyrics

Will you wear white, oh my dear, oh my dear,
Will you wear white, Jenny Jenkins?
No I won’t wear white, the color’s too bright.
I’ll buy me a fol-de-roldy, tilly-toldy, seek-a-double,
Use-a-cause-a roll to find me.
Roll, Jenny Jenkins, roll.

Will you wear green, oh my dear, oh my dear,
Will you wear green, Jenny Jenkins?
No I won’t wear green, it’s a shame to be seen.
I’ll buy me a fol-de-roldy, tilly-toldy, seek-a-double,
Use-a-cause-a roll to find me.
Roll, Jenny Jenkins, roll.

Will you wear blue, oh my dear, oh my dear,
Will you wear blue, Jenny Jenkins?
No I won’t wear blue, the color’s too true.
I’ll buy me a fol-de-roldy, tilly-toldy, seek-a-double,
Use-a-cause-a roll to find me.
Roll, Jenny Jenkins, roll.

Will you wear yellow, oh my dear, oh my dear,
Will you wear yellow, Jenny Jenkins?
No I won’t wear yellow, I’ll never get a fellow.
I’ll buy me a fol-de-roldy, tilly-toldy, seek-a-double,
Use-a-cause-a roll to find me.
Roll, Jenny Jenkins, roll.

Will you wear brown, oh my dear, oh my dear,
Will you wear brown, Jenny Jenkins?
No I won’t wear brown, cause I’d never get around.
I’ll buy me a fol-de-roldy, tilly-toldy, seek-a-double,
Use-a-cause-a roll to find me.
Roll, Jenny Jenkins, roll.

Will you wear beige, oh my dear, oh my dear,
Will you wear beige, Jenny Jenkins?
No I won’t wear beige, cause it shows my age.
I’ll buy me a fol-de-roldy, tilly-toldy, seek-a-double,
Use-a-cause-a roll to find me.
Roll, Jenny Jenkins, roll.

Will you wear orange, oh my dear, oh my dear,
Will you wear orange, Jenny Jenkins?
No orange I won’t wear, it rhymes so there.
I’ll buy me a foldy roldy tildy toldy, seek a double,
Use a causa roll to find me.
Roll, Jenny Jenkins, roll.

Will you wear black, oh my dear, oh my dear,
Will you wear black, Jenny Jenkins?
No I won’t wear black, it’s the color of my back.
I’ll buy me a foldy roldy tildy toldy, seek a double,
Use a causa roll to find me.
Roll, Jenny Jenkins, roll.

Oats Peas Beans and Barley Grow is a popular rhyme with school-aged children who are taught to recite it along with a number of actions. One child is chosen as the farmer who listens to the rhyme and then acts out the lyrics for the other children to enjoy. When each verse ends, the farmer points to a different child and they switch places, producing a new farmer each time.

The rhyme was created as a folk song and was made popular in both Britain and America. The music that is used for the song was shared in the 1790 Fifier’s Companion book with no attached lyrics and was then later published again in 1894. The song was designed as a play song and has been a source of entertainment for children since its inception.

It is now believed that the first version of the song with words was shared in 1898 and it has continued to enjoy popular usage ever since.

Oats Peas Beans and Barley Grow Lyrics

(Chorus)
Oats, peas, beans, and barley grow,
Oats, peas, beans, and barley grow,
Can you or I or anyone know
How oats, peas, beans, and barley grow?

(Chorus)

Next the farmer hoes the weeds,
Stands erect and takes his ease,
He stamps his foot and claps his hands,
And turns around to view his lands.

(Chorus)

Last the farmer harvests his seed,
Stands erect and takes his ease,
He stamps his foot and claps his hands,
And turns around to view his lands.

The Lady with the Alligator Purse has been a popular song in America for many years, with most children being able to recite the lines of the song with ease. The song tells us the tale of Miss Lucy who has a child that wants to eat everything and who the doctor can’t cure. Enter the lady with the alligator purse who offers some sage advice about feeding the child a pizza and the problem is solved!

This rhyme is most often used as part of a clapping game in the classroom that helps children to start understanding the basics of rhyme but it has also been used in skipping rope games too. There is also a ruder version of the song that is popular with children when they are not being supervised by adults.

The tune of the rhyme is the same as the Merry Go Round Broke Down which was used for the Looney Tunes theme tune!

The Lady with the Alligator Purse Lyrics

Miss Lucy had a baby, his name was Tiny Tim
She put him in the bathtub to see if he could swim
He drank up all the water, he ate up all the soap
He tried to eat the bathtub but it wouldn’t go down his throat
Miss Lucy called the doctor, Miss Lucy called the nurse
Miss Lucy called the lady with the alligator purse
In came the doctor, in came the nurse.
In came the lady with the alligator purse
“Chicken pox,” said the doctor, “Measles,” said the nurse
“Nonsense,” said the lady with the alligator purse
“Penicillin,” said the doctor, “Castor oil,” said the nurse
“Pizza,” said the lady with alligator purse

Lazy Mary is a nursery rhyme that’s sung to the same tune as “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush”. It tells the story of Lazy Mary who’s not keen to get out of bed and her mother who’s trying to tempt her out with a bowl of bread and milk. Lazy Mary isn’t interested in getting up until her mother mentions a handsome gentleman!

This rhyme is sometimes associated with a game that involves one child lying in the middle of the circle and another child playing “Mother” who tries to rouse them as everyone sings the song. Once the child is finally roused, the song then starts again with a different child taking on the role of Lazy Mary and another playing her mother.

A similar rhyme called She Won’t Get Up from Alabama in the early 1900s may have provided inspiration for the lyrics that we know today.

Lazy Mary Lyrics

Lazy Mary will you get up,
Will you get up, will you get up.
Lazy Mary will you get up,
Will you get up today.

Concentration 64 is a fast-paced clapping game that is often played by children in the playground. However, the structure means that it can also be adapted for use as a learning activity or to spark discussion. As well as being known as Concentration 64, it can also be sung as Concentration 54.

The rhyme is simple and sets out the rules of the game which is for each player to be able to name items in the chosen category with no repetition or hesitation. If the players are too slow in naming an item in the category that hasn’t been saying before, they lose! Once someone has lost, you simply choose a new person to recite the rhyme and choose a brand-new category.

The origins of the rhyme aren’t known but it has been played in schools for many years as well as being enjoyed in community groups and extra-curricular groups across the world.

Concentration 64 Lyrics

If A

If All The Raindrops is a song that first appeared in the eighth season, twelfth episode of Barney Goes To School, on the 15th August 1990. Initially the song was shorter, but the producers of the show later added a third stanza which is a reprise of the first paragraph. If All The Raindrops has a whimsical feel keeping in mind that sweets and lemon drops couldn’t possibly fall from the sky. However, pretend play is integral to a child’s psyche and development. This rhyme taps into the parts of the brain responsible for imagination making the child dream of a world where it rains tasty treats!

Few modern kids songs are this new, it is very rare that a song this recent is passed down orally by kids and parents, thus If All The Raindrops is part of a select few songs that include The Rubber Duckie Song from Sesame Street among others.

As the children sing this lovely song, they will often take actions in sync with the words. For instance, they can sprinkle their fingers to symbolize the rain and falling snowflakes.

Who Stole The Cookie From The Cookie Jar also known as Who Took The Cookie From The Cookie Jar is a traditional American nursery rhyme that is great for both singing aloud as a group and playing a game.

There are some suggestions that it started out as an English song, using the word “biscuit” but was changed to cookie when it crossed the Atlantic to American school children. However, those rumors haven’t been proven either way.

The song lyrics are simple and repetitive but are perfect for playing a round-robin game. One person is nominated to be “it” during the first rendition of the song and when accused will say “Who, me?” The song continues with the next person playing the same role, and so on, until everyone has had a go at being accused.

Spoiler alert: you never do find out who took the cookies!

Who Took The Cookie From The Cookie Jar Lyrics

Who took the cookie from the cookie jar?
Number one took the cookie from the cookie jar!
Who me?
Yes, you!
Couldn’t be!
Then who took the cookie from the cookie jar?

Lemonade Crunchy Ice isn’t as old as many of the other popular nursery rhymes and clapping songs, as it’s been around since the 1980s only.

How To Play Lemonade, Crunchy Ice Game

A fairly simple rhyme, it can be either used as a hand game with others or sung out loud. At the end of the song, the participants have to turn around, touch the ground, and then freeze in a pose. The first person to move loses.

The clapping game can either be done as a pair, or more children can do it together, sitting in a circle and clapping with their partner on either side. This is a lot more challenging as it’s quite tricky to clap with a different person to both the left and the right!

Slight wording variations can be found in different cities, but the chant remains the same overall. Today, this fun hand-clapping game is popular in America but across Asia too.

This simple counting-out rhyme originally from the United States is now popular all over the English speaking world. It is a fun game to play in kindergarten or preschool alike but older kids may enjoy it as well.

How to Play Bubble Gum, Bubble Gum in a Dish

All the kids in the group will put two fists out while one designated player will move inside the circle tapping the fists of the other kids in the group while singing the song. When the song reaches the verse “How many pieces do you wish”, the player whose hand was tapped will say a number, generally not bigger than 10 (larger groups of kids may say a number greater than 10).

After this the countdown begins. The kid in the middle of the circle will count clockwise the fists in the circle to the number indicated by the previous player and that fist will be “out”. When both fists of a player are “out” the player is out completely. The game continues until one fist is left.

Alternatively if the number is lower, you won’t count fists but players.

“Bubble Gum, Bubble Gum In a Dish” Lyrics

Bubble gum, bubble gum, in a dish,
How many pieces do you wish?
Five.
One, two, three, four, five.
And you must go out.

Down by the Banks of the Hanky Panky is a simple and fun song that is generally sung as part of a circle game.

As with most rhymes the origins of Hanky Panky are unclear but it most likely originated in the United States somewhere around the 19th century. In 1895, a similar rhyme was published in Virginia:

He came to the banks
Of the Pasquotank,
Where the bull-frogs jump
From bank to bank….

Currently there are more versions of the rhyme in circulation and more playground games are performed while singing it, most notably a circle game and a counting game.

How to Play Down by the Banks of the Hanky Panky

The right hand of each player sits under the palm of the person on the right while the left hand of each player rests on top of the hand of the player to the left. When the song starts a designated player will tap with their left hand the hand of the person sitting on the left and that person will tap as well another person’s hand at the next beat and the clap is passed along the circle until the song ends when someone’s hand is being clapped when saying “Kerplop”. Then, the person whose hand was touched during that beat is out and the song starts again until only one player remains.

Down by the Banks Counting Game

To play a counting game, replace the first two words of the second line (Where the) with a random number (for example 10) and count backwards. An example:

Down by the banks of the Hanky Panky,
10 bullfrogs jump from bank to banky,
With a hip, hop, hippity, hop,
Leap off a lily pad and go KERPLOP!
Down by the banks of the Hanky Panky,
9 bullfrogs jump from bank to banky,
With a hip, hop, hippity, hop,
Leap off a lily pad and go KERPLOP!

And so on. You can either choose to stop counting at “One” or when no bullfrogs jump anymore.

“Down by the Banks of the Hanky Panky” Lyrics

Down by the banks of the Hanky Panky,
Where the bullfrogs jump from bank to banky,
With a hip, hop, hippity, hop,
Leap off a lily pad and go KERPLOP!

Down Down Baby is a children’s song and a clapping game. It is a very simple game that can be played by either two or more players.

The origins of Down Down Baby are unclear but in the 1960s Little Anthony and the Imperials recorded Shimmy Shimmy Ko-Ko Bop. Since then the song has been adapted by many artists such as Nelly, Simian Mobile Disco or Usher.

As with all clapping games, there are many variations both in the lyrics of the rhyme and in the way it is played. Below you can find the most common versions. Watch de video instruction below the lyrics.

Little Sally Walker is a circle game popular among kids, especially girls. Often times when boys play the same game in groups, the lyrics are changed to Willy Wally Walker.

All the players are dancing in a circle, one of them is Sally Walker and stays in the middle. The kids are dancing and clapping while singing the lyrics. On the verse “So she stopped in front of me” Sally Walker, the player in the middle will stop in front of someone.

On the verse “So she stopped in front of me” the “Sally walker” player will stop in front of someone in the circle and while saying: “Hey girl (boy) do your thing /Do your thing and switch!” they switch places and they repeat the verse dancing face to face. Then the new Sally walker goes in the middle and the dance continues until the next “switch”.

In march 2019 a song based on this rhyme was recorded by Australain rapper Iggy Azalea.

“Miss Susie had a steamboat” (or Lucy, Mary and other names) is an old jump-rope song.
Nowadays the song is more widely associated with a clapping game.

It shares its tune with another popular jump rope song called “Miss Lucy had a baby”, that’s why they are very often confused with each other.

In “Miss Susie had a steamboat” each verse insinuates an inappropriate word or situation that will be revealed in the next sentence, but which will be replaced by an innocent expression. Thus the lyrics were subjected to many improvisations and different versions appeared over time.

“Skip to My Lou” is a singing-game and dance, famous since the 1840s.
Searching for the origins of this partner-stealing game, musician Stephen Frederick Starr recalls its resemblance to the African-American dance “Lolotte Pov’piti Lolotte”. The meaning of the word Lou, however, comes from the Scottish word for love, loo.

Skip to My Loo Singing Game

How to play

The game associated with this dance is a classic partner-stealing game. Everyone who plays (should be an odd number) must form couples and then the couples form a circle, or a square dance. The person who remains unaccompanied goes in the middle.

While singing or listening to the song the couples will skip hand in hand around in a ring. After the verse “Lost my partner, what’ll I do?” the middle person will choose a partner from the existing couples, when they have their hands free, saying “I’ll get another one just like you” or “better than you”. If they cannot catch one they will try for another round. The person left without a partner will continue the game in the same manner. If you like funny rhymes Hey, Diddle Diddle is another popular and silly one to try.

Draw a Pail of Water (known in the USA as “Draw a bucket of water”) is an traditional nursery rhyme that first appeared published in “The Nursery Rhymes of England: Obtained Principally from Oral Tradition” by James Orchard Halliwell-Phillipps in 1843.

There is also a simple game associated with the song, the instructions are described below:

Game Instructions

Chiildren stand in a row holding hands. A child who is the leader sits in front of them. Another pair of children hold their hands lifted up in the air to form an arch. The leader will walk under the arch followed by all the other children, all while singing the song. The last child from the group will be captured by the two children forming an arch.

The process is repeated, the song is sung again until all the children are captured by the two forming the arch.

“Draw a Pail of Water” Lyrics

Draw a pail of water,
For my lady’s daughter;
My father’s a king, and my mother’s a queen,
My two little sisters are dressed in green,
Stamping grass and parsley,
Marigold leaves and daisies.
One rush! two rush!
Pray thee, fine lady, come under my bush.

Draw a Bucket of Water Lyrics
Draw a bucket of water
For my lady’s daughter.
One in a rush and
Two in a rush
And the first old lady pops under.

Draw a bucket of water

Alice the Camel or sometimes known as Sally the Camel is a classic nursery rhyme that teaches kids to count down.

To make the song more interactive, kids can show the number of fingers on their hand with each new verse. Each time they sing “So, go, Alice, go” kids can pretend running while during the last line “Boom, boom, boom, boom” they can jump as high as loud as they can.

Here We Go Looby Loo or simply Looby Loo is a fun action song that can be performed by many kids at once. Its very simple moves and catchy tune make it a favorite of very youngs too!

Dance Instructions

The Looby Loo dance is very similar to Hokey Cokey. First kids need to sit in a circle holding hands. If not all kids know the dance before, it is best to demonstrate first by singing the song and showing the moves.

The first part of the song is the chorus where kids will hold hands and dance in a circle. The next parts are the action parts where each kid individually moves his/her body parts according to the song’s lyrics. As you can see here, the lyrics are very similar to Hokey Cokey.

To make things more interesting you can change “looby-loo” each time to something else like “dooby-doo” or “dooby-daah”.

Little Robin Redbreast is an old traditional rhyme that first appeared in the first ever anthology of nursery rhyme named “Tommy Thumb’s Pretty Song Book” published around 1744.

Another different version of Little Robin Redbreast appeared in the 1833 version of “The Only True Mother Goose Melodies”.

Original Version

The first published version was shorter:

Little Robin Red breast,
Sitting on a pole,
Nidde, Noddle, Went his head.
And poop went his Hole.

Today a slightly different version of the original song is used as a fingerplay.

“Little Robin Redbreast “Fingerplay

The rhyme has been used as a fingerplay for a very long time, the first instructions were published in a book from 1920 called “Boys and Girls Bookshelf; a Practical Plan of Character Building:
Little Robin Redbreast
Sat upon a rail,
(Right hand extended in shape of a bird is poised on extended forefinger of left hand.)
Niddle noddle went his head,
And waggle went his tail.
(Little finger of right hand waggles from side to side.)

“Little Robin Redbreast “Lyrics

Little Robin Redbreast sat upon a tree,
Up went pussycat and down went he,
Down came pussycat, away Robin ran,
Says little Robin Redbreast, “Catch me if you can.”

Little Robin Redbreast jumped upon a wall,
Pussycat jumped after him, and almost had a fall.
Little Robin chirped and sang and what did pussy say?
Pussycat said “Meow”, and Robin flew away.

Miss Mary Mack is one of the most popular clapping game. It is first found in written form in the United States in 1888. Although the song is American, even mentioning the 4th of July, it is very popular throughout the English speaking world.

Who is Mary Mack

Little is known about who Mary Mack was but given its geographical origin, it is believed that Mary Mack was referred to the warship USS Merrimack named after the Merrimack River. The theory might be true as the Merrimack’s color was black with silver rivets.

Miss Mary Mack Game

The clapping game is played by two persons standing or sitting opposite each other while clapping their hands rhythmically.

The game starts with the hands positioned together facing your partner. Next, cross your hands and put them on your chest (left hand on your right shoulder and vice versa). The person facing you should do the same. This is the time you should start singing the first word of the song.

Next, while saying the second syllable, place your hands on your hips. While continuing the song, place both hands together again in the starting position.

The fourth move will be the first one where you will meet your partner’s hands but it will not be a straight clap but one done diagonally (your right hand meets your partner’s right hand) while singing the next syllable of the song. Then the two left hands meet diagonally and finally the two hands meet each other. Repeat the process with each line of the song.

“Miss Mary Mack” Lyrics

Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack
All dressed in black, black, black
With silver buttons, buttons, buttons
All down her back, back, back. (or “Up and down her back back back”)
She asked her mother, mother, mother
for fifty (or 15) cents, cents, cents
To see the elephants, elephants, elephants (or hippos or cows)
Jump the fence, fence, fence.
They jumped so high, high, high
they reached the sky, sky, sky
And didn’t (or never) come back, back, back
Till the 4th of July ly ly.
She asked her mother, mother, mother
For 5 cents more, more, more
To see the elephants, elephants, elephants
Jump the door, door, door.
They jumped to the flow flow flow
they stubbed their toe toe toe
and that was the end end end
of the elephant show show show.

Hokey Cokey is a very popular children’s dance song. It rose to popularity during the 1940s when it was recorded simultaneously in the UK by Jimmy Kennedy (The Hokey Cokey) in 1942 and in the United States by Robert Degan and Joe Brier (The Hokey Pokey Dance).

The song was also recorded by the Ram Trio in 1950 and by Ray Anthony’s orchestra in 1953, a version that charted in the USA.

The origins of the song can be traced back to the 19th century, it was first mentioned in Robert Chamber’s “Popular Rhymes of Scotland” in 1826. That version was very different from the contemporary one:

Fal de ral la, fal de ral la:
Hinkumbooby, round about;
Right hands in, and left hands out,
Hinkumbooby, round about;
Fal de ral la, fal de ral la
In 1872 a version called “Ugly Mug” was published:
I put my right hand in
I put my right hand out
I give my right hand, shake, shake, shake, and turn myself about

The song and dance moves vary between the United States and the United Kingdom. The UK version is slightly more popular wordlwide.

Dance Moves

In the first four verses the body part is moved according to the lyrics. On “You do the Hokey Cokey” each player joins their hands and rocks them side to side. On “And you turn around” players turn around clockwise with the hands still joined together.

During the chorus, during each “Whoa” that lasts three beats, players raise their joined hands and move towards the centre of the circle and on “the hokey cokey” or often “the hokey cokey cokey” they move outwards to their original positions.

On the last two verses, players will bend their knees and raise their arms then on “rah rah rah” they will raise their hands and clap them. In some areas, players will run towards the centre with their hands up.

Is it Hokey Cokey or Hokey Pokey?

Generally in the United Kingdom or Jamaica, the song is called Hokey Cokey and in the USA, Canada and Australia it is called Hokey Pokey. The first modern version of the song from 1942 by Jimmy Kennedy was called “The Cokey Cokey” while the first modern US version from 1944 was called “The Hokey Pokey”.

Why is it Called Hokey Cokey?

There are no certainties regarding the meaning of “Hokey Cokey” but supposedly the name of the song is derived from the magician’s incantation “Hocus Pocus”

“Hokey Cokey” Lyrics

You put your left arm in,
Your left arm out:
In, out, in, out.
You shake it all about.
You do the hokey cokey,
And you turn around.
That’s what it’s all about!

Chorus:

Whoa, the hokey cokey
Whoa, the hokey cokey
Whoa, the hokey cokey
Knees bend, arms stretch,
Rah, rah, rah!

The “left hand” is changed in subsequent stanzas with “right arm”, “left leg”, “right leg”, “whole self” or any other body part including “left hip”, “right hip”, “left elbow”, “right elbow” etc.

USA version

Both the song and the dance instructions differ slightly in the USA. While the first part of the song is similar, the chorus is different:

You do the hokey pokey,
The hokey pokey,
The hokey pokey.
That’s what it’s all about!

On each “pokey”, the players raise their arms with the index fingers pointed up, shaking their arms up and down and their hips side to side.

Originally a Moroccan song, A Ram Sam Sam is today a very popular children’s song around the world. Its original lyrics have often been modified.

Most often it is performed as an action songs where children must perform certain actions during the lyrics.

How To Play

There are different actions performed during the lyrics, below we present the two main popular versions.
A ram sam sam – Hands clapping the lap rhytmically to the tune of “ram sam sam”
Guli guli guli guli – Hands are winding around each other repeatedly
A rafiq, a rafiq – both hands move to one side of the head as if sleeping.

Alternatively

A ram sam sam – pound fists on top of each other in turns
Guli guli guli guli – hands are pulled apart as if something is sticky
A rafiq, a rafiq – index fingers are spun on the side of the head as if to signal that someone is crazy
The lyrics are sang repeatedly, often the actions must be performed faster each time.

There is not much meaning to the lyrics, even in the original Moroccan dialect of Arabic, “A ram sam sam” means nothing. However, “guli” means “tell me” while “a rafiq” means “friend”. The lyrics were often distorted, sometimes “a rafiq” may sound like “agapee” or “arami” while “a ram sam sam” is sometimes sang as “a ram sa sa” or “a ram zam zam”.

“A Ram Sam Sam” Lyrics

A ram sam sam, a ram sam sam
Guli guli guli guli guli ram sam sam
A ram sam sam, a ram sam sam
Guli guli guli guli guli ram sam sam
A rafiq, a rafiq
Guli guli guli guli guli ram sam sam

Miss Polly Had a Dolly is a popular nursery rhyme in the United Kingdom.

Its origins are obscure but most likely dating back to the early 20th century or late 19th century.

The song is a very popular action song too played in classrooms. Kids will do actions based on the lyrics of the song. After the second line (who was sick sick sick) children will pretend to rock a doll close to their chest. When the third line (So she phoned the doctor) is sang, the children will put their hands close to their ears to pretend calling a doctor.

Miss Polly Had a Dolly is often sung by parents when their little ones are sick.

“Miss Polly Had a Dolly”Lyrics

Miss Polly had a dolly who was sick, sick, sick.
So she phoned for the doctor to come quick, quick, quick.
The doctor came with his bag and his hat,
And knocked at the door with a rat-a-tat-tat.

He looked at the dolly and shook his head,
And said “Miss Polly put her straight to bed.
He wrote a paper for a pill, pill, pill.
I’ll be back in the morning with the bill, bill, bill.

“Ten in the Bed” is a counting song and lullaby, with repetitive verses. It has been popular since the early 20th century although its origins are unknown.

Similar with Ten Green Bottles this song is an easy way for kids to learn to count down.

“Ten In The Bed” Singing Game

In kindergarten children can play a simple game on this song by mimicking the lyrics. Lying on the bed or standing all the kids will roll over in the same direction and on each verse one of them will fall down on the floor. The song can start with the number of available children.

It is also a lullaby, a favorite way to get the little ones to sleep. The last verse ends with either “Good Night” or “”Good Bye” or Alone at last” and other variations, depending on when it is sung.

“The Muffin Man” is a traditional nursery rhyme and singing game dating back to early nineteenth-century, England.

The rhyme, first recorded in 1820, tells the story of a muffin man from Drury Lane, an overpopulated area of London where poverty, brothels, gambling and criminality was abundant.

A muffin man used to be the person who was delivering fresh muffins from home to home, for the low class people living in the English cities of the 19th century.

“The Muffin Man” as a game

Although the lyrics of the song remained the same over time, the game has at least three versions, one being described by Henry Mackarness in 1888, in “The Young Lady’s Book”. It goes like this:

How to play:

All the children are staying in a circle, one of them will begin the game by returning to the one sitting next to him/her and asking:

“Do you know the muffin man? The muffin man, the muffin man.
Do you know the muffin man who lives on Drury Lane”

He/She will reply by singing the next verse:

“Yes, I know the muffin man. The muffin man, the muffin man.
Oh, yes, I know the muffin man, who lives on Drury Lane.”

Then both of them will sing together:

“Then two of us know the muffin man, the muffin man
Yes, two of us know the muffin man, who lives on Drury Lane”

Then the second children will address the third children by singing

“Do you know the muffin man? The muffin man, the muffin man.
Do you know the muffin man who lives on Drury Lane”

And the answer will be sung together by the first, the second and the third player:

“Then three of us know the muffin man, the muffin man”….The game continue until the last children have been asked and all the players will end the game by singing: “We all know the Muffin Man”…

“The Muffin Man” Lyrics

Do [or “Oh, do”] you know the muffin man,
The muffin man, the muffin man,
Do you know the muffin man,
Who lives in Drury Lane?

Yes [or “Oh, yes”], I know the muffin man,
The muffin man, the muffin man,
Yes, I know the muffin man,

“The Muffin Man” Original Version

Do [or “Oh, do”] you know the muffin man,

“The Farmer in the Dell” is one of the oldest and most popular nursery rhymes around the world.

The word dell defines a small wooded valley.

The rhyme has been translated in different languages like English, French, Romanian or Thai, while the German version of the song “Es fuhr ein Bau’r ins Holz” is the original one, dating back to 1820s Germany.

“The Farmer in the Dell” as a game

The Farmer in the Dell is also a very popular singing game, being played by a group of children, usually nine. The game can be adapted by changing the number of the characters in the song.

How to play:

At the begining one children will be choosed to be the farmer and he wil stand up in the middle of a circle formed by the others. They will dance around him singing the first stanza of the song.

The farmer in the dell
The farmer in the dell
Heigh-ho,the derry-o
The farmer in the dell

At “The farmer takes a wife” verse the “farmer” will have to choose, without looking a “wife” from the group of dancing players. The two kids, the “farmer” and the “wife” will stay now together in the middle, holding hands and forming another circle.

The game continue singing the next stanza, the main circle of children dancing around the small circle.

The farmer takes a wife
The farmer takes a wife
Heigh-ho, the derry-o
The farmer takes a wife

At “The wife takes the child” verse the farmer and the wife will choose again another player as the “child” who will go together with them in the middle, forming a bigger circle.

The game finishes with “The cheese stands alone” verse when the last children will remain outside of the interiour circle. He will be the farmer in the next round of the game.

*Tip: When the interior circle will become larger than the exterior one, the children from outside can dance in a semicircle.

Similar to Ten in the bed, “Ten Green Bottles” is a counting song and singing game with repetitive lyrics. It is more popular in United Kingdom with different versions circulating, some of them vulgar or satirical.

“Ten Green Bottles” singing game

Ten green bottles is an easy and fun way for kids to learn to count down. Here is how to play:

Draw each number on separate cards, starting with the number 1 and ending with the number of children available to play, and hang them on each children so they all can see it.

The children will dance in a circle, holding hands singing the lyrics of the song. They will have to fall down one by one until all of them will lay down, each time they say the verse: “And if one green bottle should accidentally fall”. The children will have to point who is the one who will fall down, based on their numbers.

Later, after the kids know better how to count, the game can move to the next level: instead of drawing the cards, each child will have to memorize a number to know when it is their turn to fall down.

The word “hanging” is sometimes replaced by “sitting” or “standing”.

“Ten Green Bottles” Lyrics

“See Saw Margery Daw” is a traditional nursery rhyme and folksong dating back to 18th century England. It has been widely used as a popular playground song for centuries.

The lyrics as known today were first recorded in the Mother Goose’s Melody collection (1765, London) while the tune associated with the song was collected later on, around 1870 by William Elliot, the author of the National Nursery Rhymes and Nursery Songs.

Originally the words might have been used long time ago by sawyers during work. References about such connection can be found in Richard Brome’s play “The Antipodes” (1640).

“See-Saw playground” as a singing game

See Saw Margery Daw is also a very popular playground singing game having also its roots in the early 18th century. As a game, it was first recorded in 1700 and it was known as the “see-saw” game. It was played usually by two children.

Following the same simple rules the lyrics of See Saw Margery Daw are usually sung by two kids moving backwards and forwards, sometimes holding a band or their own hands or rocking on a see-saw balance.

“See Saw Margery Daw” Lyrics

A common modern version is:

See Saw Margery Daw,
Jacky shall have a new master;
Jacky shall earn but a penny a day,
Because he can’t work any faster.

“See Saw Margery Daw” Older Lyrics

See-saw, Margery Daw,
Sold her bed and lay on the straw;
Sold her bed and lay upon hay
And pisky came and carried her away.
For wasn’t she a dirty slut
To sell her bed and lie in the dirt?

“Row, Row, Row Your Boat” is a popular nursery rhyme originating in the 19th century America.

It is an educational song and also an interactive singing game for kids. It can be played at home by parents and children or in kindergartens. While singing the lyrics, the kids must be sitting down face to face holding their hands, leaning to the front and to the back imitating the dance of a boat.

It also can be a good game to play in the pool to make the kids more confident in water. You can have your baby sitting on a mat in front of you while you are cradling him singing “Row, Row, Row your boat”. You can also hold their hands to give them more confidence.

The lyrics of this song can be used by teachers and parents to explain the children the importance of a positive attitude in life. Row, Row, Row Your Boat’s meaning is to not quit, keep going with your life no matter how many difficulties or duties you are meeting.

The origin of the song is uncertain. Similar lyrics were first published in 1852 and the version of the song as known today have been republished later in The Franklin Square Song Collection without any reference about the author.

“Row, Row, Row Your Boat” Lyrics

Row, row, row your boat,
Gently down the stream.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
Life is but a dream.

“Round and Round the Garden” Finger Play

This nursery rhyme is usually accompanied by other actions, usually played by an adult to a child. During the first two verses of the song, the adult traces his finger in a circle on the child’s palm. During the third verse the adult climbs the child’s arm and in the final verse the adult tickled the child.

“Ring a Ring o’ Roses” more commonly known in the USA as “Ring Around the Rosie” is a folksong and singing game that was first published in 1881 in England.

Although first published in 1881 only, it is believed that the tune of the song was well known at least one hundred years before as well. A very similar German nursery rhyme and singing game was already published in the 18th century.

Ring Around the Rosie Meaning

There is a theory that the lyrics would depict the Great Plague, but this was proved to be unfounded, as this claim originated in the 20th century and was based upon the modern version of the lyrics, not the original ones.

Ring Around the Rosie Game

“Ring Around the Rosie” is a very popular singing game and it is easy to learn. Children hold hands and dance around until at the end of each stanza an action is taken – falling down or getting up. There are many known versions of the song and various different actions can be performed as well (jumping up or kneeling down).

“Pop Goes the Weasel” is a nursery rhyme originating in England.

It is one of the more popular singing games. Although the first written records of the song date back to the mid 19th century, it is believed that the origins of the song go back to the 18th century England.

Meaning

There are many known versions of Pop Goes the Weasel. Currently there are two different popular versions in use in the UK and in the USA. The original version of the song (published in the 1850’s) is featured below:

Up and down the City Road
In and out the Eagle
That’s the way the money goes
Pop! goes the weasel.

There is much debate regarding the meaning of this rhyme. It is widely believed that the Eagle mentioned in the song refers to the Eagle Tavern near the City Road in North London. Thus, it is easy to assume that originally, the song refers to drinking at the Eagle Tavern. However, there are plenty of theories about the meaning of the last verse, which gives the song’s title as well.

It is possible that pop refers to pawns, and thus the lyrics would mean to drink until there’s no money left so people pawn their suits to grab more money (weasel may mean suit in the slang of Cockney, a slang that often used rhymes as a speech form).

Another supposition is that the weasel refers to the small mammal predator named weasel, and they indeed pop their heads when bothered.

Whatever the original meaning of the song was, when it became popular in the USA in the 1850’s, the phrase “Pop Goes the Weasel” was used as “just like that”.

The dance was very popular in England too; there are two references that Queen Victoria used to play it at the balls organized by the Court.

Even today, there are plenty of variations of the lyrics. Below, you will find the two most popular versions of them. First, the version more popular in the UK. The second version is most popular in the USA.

“Pop Goes the Weasel” Lyrics

British version of the song:
Half a pound of tuppenny rice,
Half a pound of treacle.
That’s the way the money goes,
Pop! goes the weasel.

Up and down the City road,
In and out the Eagle,
That’s the way the money goes,
Pop! goes the weasel.

“Pop Goes the Weasel” American version

All around the Mulberry Bush,
The monkey chased the weasel.
The monkey stopped to pull up his sock,
Pop! goes the weasel.

Half a pound of tuppenny rice,
Half a pound of treacle.
Mix it up and make it nice,
Pop! goes the weasel.
